Project: Pantri
Pantri is a smart kitchen hub designed to leverage voice control for a more convenient cooking experience.
Role: UI Designer
Industry: Smart Home Technology
Duration: 2 Months
Background
As smart home technology becomes more common, the kitchen remains a central hub, but the integration of smart devices often results in fragmented control. Pantri was developed to unify these devices into a single, voice-controlled platform, offering home chefs a seamless, hands-free cooking experience.
The Problem
Home chefs often struggle with multitasking in the kitchen, especially when their hands are full or dirty, making it difficult to interact with various smart appliances.
The Solution
Pantri aims to solve this by providing a unified, voice-controlled platform that streamlines cooking tasks and enhances the overall kitchen experience.
The Struggle
Fragmentation of Control
Integrating various smart kitchen devices into a single platform was technically challenging, as each appliance often operates on different protocols and interfaces.
User Interface Design
Designing a voice-controlled interface that could effectively handle the diverse tasks involved in cooking required careful consideration of user needs and behaviors.
User Adoption
Ensuring that users would feel comfortable and find value in adopting a new platform for their kitchen routines was a key concern.
Research Findings
Method:
User Interview
Conducted with 10 home chefs to gather qualitative insights into their daily cooking routines, challenges.
Surveys
Distributed to 20 potential users to quantify their use of kitchen appliances and their interest in voice-controlled technology.
Contextual Inquiry
Observed 3 participants in their kitchen environments, focusing on how they multitasked and interacted with their appliances.
Multitasking is a Pain Point
50% of users reported difficulty in managing multiple tasks while cooking, particularly when their hands were occupied or dirty.
Interest in Voice Control
80% of survey respondents indicated a strong interest in a voice-controlled system that could unify their kitchen appliances.
Ideation
The storyboard demonstrated how Pantri allows users to perform tasks like preheating the oven and managing grocery lists without interrupting their cooking workflow.
By incorporating voice control, the storyboard highlighted how Pantri streamlines cooking processes, making multitasking more manageable.
The storyboard effectively visualized the platform’s capability to support users in real-time, reinforcing the user experience and aiding in driving adoption.
Pantri's recipe search allows users to quickly find and follow recipes, integrating voice commands to streamline cooking tasks.
The command UI provides hands-free control over all kitchen appliances, enabling seamless multitasking without interrupting the cooking process.
Gaining access to your favorite and saved recipe. Searching for saved recipes with Voice Command option.
You can search for new recipes by simply click on the search, or using Voice command option.
You can change the voice command of connected devices. You can also add more command into each devices.
Positive Reception
90% of users found the voice control feature intuitive and easy to use, significantly reducing the need for physical interaction.
Design Adjustments
Users suggested improvements to the visual layout, such as adding more clear indicators for active devices and feedback after issuing commands.
Feature Requests
Some users requested the ability to customize voice commands and integrate additional smart devices not initially supported.
Strength of the Platform:
Pantri effectively unified the control of various smart kitchen devices, providing a cohesive experience.
The voice control feature was highly praised for its convenience, especially in multitasking scenarios.
The interface was designed with the user in mind, making it easy to navigate and operate.
Weakness of the Platform:
The system might lack consistent feedback mechanisms, making it difficult for users to know if their commands have been successfully executed, leading to potential frustration.
The design might include too many features on a single screen, creating visual clutter that can detract from the overall user experience and make the interface harder to navigate.
Underutilization of voice commands might limit the full potential of the platform, especially for users who prefer voice-driven interactions.
